Currently seven First Nations sit on the Muskwa-Kechika Advisory Board (M-KAB), three from Treaty 8 and four from Kaska Dena. Through the Muskwa-Kechika Advisory Board these First Nations communities have an opportunity to engage in advising government regarding the management of the M-KMA. The current representation may change in the future according to the outcome of Advisory Board strategic planning and review of Advisory Board structure following the 2005 funding announcement.
The "Incorporating First Nations Values into the M-KMA" Workshop, held in Fort Nelson in 2003, provided an excellent opportunity for sharing information and knowledge between First Nations and the Advisory Board.
In some aspects of M-KMA management the Advisory Board and First Nations share values, for example both wish to see the land, wilderness and spiritual values of the M-KMA conserved and managed for the future.
The M-KAB, through the Muskwa-Kechika Trust Fund, is seeking ways to ensure that activities are managed to maintain First Nations history, culture and traditional way of life in the M-KMA. Gathering traditional ecological knowledge is one manner in which government and industry managers can ensure that activities do not conflict with areas of high value to First Nations.
