Tourism generates direct economic benefits to the area through commercial recreation activities in the M-KMA such as guided river rafting, guided horseback trips, sight-seeing flights, and visitation to lodges located within the Management Area. The attraction of both front country and backcountry recreational activities also has economic value to local communities in the region.
Front country recreation access to the Muskwa-Kechika is available along a portion of the world famous Alaska Highway that runs through the M-KMA from Mill Creek at mile 363 to Liard River Hot Springs at mile 496.
If you are planning a trip by vehicle through the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area, the Alaska Highway is your route.
Three M-KMA destination provincial parks easily accessed from the Alaska Highway are:
Alaska Highway Community Initiative
Although the "Alaska Highway Community Initiative" is not directly linked to the M-KMA or the M-KAB, the initiative will have management implications along the area of the Alaska Highway that passes through the M-KMA. The initiative has been undertaken through partnerships between communities in British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska, and with potential involvement from the Canada and United States federal governments.
The signatories of the initiative have designated a Working Group mandated to develop a consistent theme for the Alaska Highway that will benefit communities along the highway. As well, plans include involving First Nations, developing a coordinated communication strategy, creating a common vision, inventorying the Alaska Highway's assets and areas of improvement, developing a coordinated corridor management plan, and developing short- and long- term funding priorities.
To learn more about the Alaska Highway Community Initiative, please visit the Northern Rockies Alaska Highway Tourism Association (NRAHTA) website.
The Muskwa-Kechika Advisory Board will be closely monitoring activity along the M-KMA Alaska Highway Corridor and working with relevant agencies and groups to ensure that the highway corridor is well planned according to the intent of the M-KMA.
